What is a birth chart?

Inception.

Let us start from the beginning, what is a birth chart? In a sense, it is a Earth-centered model, with you at the center. The natal birth chart is a 360-degree view of the sky at the moment of your birth. When you took your first breath, that precise moment in time and space, the planets stood still for that exact moment and those are the energetic patterns the astrologer zooms into in the natal birth chart. It is believed that there is an intimate connection between your moment of birth, the planets and their position in the zodiacal wheel. The birth chart itself is divided equally by 30 degrees, view it as a pizza, there are 12 pieces or what the ancients referred to as houses. Each house is assigned to a general theme that we encounter in life. The house could represent finances, health, partnership or marriage, siblings, career and so forth. The 12 signs of the zodiac are found in this wheel and occupy one of the twelve houses.

The ancients, as far back as Babylonia, were interested in what the planets were doing, and the possible effects of their movements. The planets, considered wandering stars by the ancients due to their erratic nature of movement and variable speeds, were likened to gods, inspired by Greek cosmology and mathematics. The gods of Greek mythology were not without flaws. They all were given certain characteristics, personalities and in a sense-power. Babylonian astrology considered the zodical constellations as stations of the gods. The planets or gods, and would move from house to house, all varying by speed. As they move they leave trails of their presence.

Today, we interpret the planets to represent archetypal attributes, energetic patterns that infuse our atmosphere. They do not necessarily cause things to happen, but they flavor the water so to speak. Where they land in your birth chart, they impart general personalities or influences. Free will still exists.

The overall picture of our chart, is likened to the wheel of fortune. Each one of us experience similar overarching themes in life to some degree. None of us, not one, completely escapes the turning of the wheel. The wheel turns, sometimes we move gently with it and remained centered. There are times where that wheel will roll right over us and grinds us down. This is where studying the natal birth chart gives us a deeper understanding to the ebb and flow of fortune in our own life. Knowing what is coming down the stream, allows us to grab a paddle and direct the currents a little more seamlessly. Reflecting on past turbulent tides or peaceful waters, shines a light in corners we may have trouble seeing without the added layer of astrology.

Natal chart readings allow us to dive deeper into celestial mysteries that even our ancestors knew held powerful secrets. We can gain greater insight and spiritual guidance in regards to rooms the planets occupy in our own chart. They can move us to be more efficient in our actions, encourage us towards healthier paths and helps us avoid pitfalls that entangle our karma deeper.
