The Language of Fish

Pisces New Moon, a language-learning lunation

A watery, sensitive, intuitive Pisces New Moon flowed forward on February 27th. This fresh lunation follows on the heels of a lot of mercurial activity in the sign of Pisces.

Let us refresh on the symbolic nature of Mercury, also referred to as Hermes or Thoth, associated with all levels of communication. Hermes and Mercury are interchangeable, one being the Greek and the latter being a Roman god. Mercury/Hermes is directly linked with writing, speech, mathematics, but also hermeneutics. Hermeneutics, root word “Hermes”, is the theory and methodology of interperting wisdom texts, like the Bible or Torah, and astrology. Hermes, the messenger is also known as the psychopomp who has the innate birth right to travel between the mortal and immortal worlds, often delivering messages of the gods to us mere mortals.

Mercury has been in Pisces, a detrimental position, since Valentine’s Day. Mercury does much better in the signs of Gemini and Pisces opposition, Virgo. In Gemini and Virgo, the mind can function smoothly, speech is eloquent and precise, and feelings seem a bit more rational. Here in Pisces, Mercury feels scattered like slippery fish, challenged to bridge emotion to mind, and make it make sense. Yet he does know how to do this, it justs take a little more effort and a deeper hermeneutic mind. The fish instinctinually move together to form a line defense when threatened, or know when to dart into a quick retreat. Of all the water signs, the fish really only have one line of defense and that is instinct and quicksilver movement, like Mercury. The protective Crab of Cancer and the Sting of the Scorpion arm the other wet signs, but Pisces is left only with movement. Pisces also rules the feet, the symbolic wheels of man, moving us through life, through the cycles.

Maybe the real goal of Mercury in Pisces is to feel through it more, move with intuitive fluidity, and allow the emotion to guide reaction and shape purpose. Maybe you too have been learning to see with a more nuanced eye, speak with deeper emotion. Mercury in Pisces is the language of the fish, learning to connect your soul’s experience here on earth with a more symbolic language, one that may not be based in rational systems but one in archetypal imagery. A language that helps lend a more spirited purpose to the outward rational mind.

Language Learning Lunation

This past week’s journey of Mercury in Pisces, where the New Moon will begin a new cycle is coloring this lunation and teaching us to speak another language. The language of fish.

On the 20th, Mercury and Jupiter had an uncomfortable mutual square, opening this mercurial sequence. This square could have presented a challenge to a status quo in your own life, perhaps an approach, a value, a belief was criticized, questioned, or expired. Maybe your own routine mode of thinking failed you. This square opened up a conflict, one that hit a chord that ties your mind to the heart, similar to the Piscean fish who remain bound eternally, so they never lose their way.

On the 23rd, Mercury and Mars met through a more constructive aspect, and this would be the same day that Mars would finally station direct in Cancer. This watery trine brings forward much more helpful solutions, communication, problem-solving action. A day where you could connect more easily to your emotions and feel courageous enough to speak up. Emotions and heart may have been heightened, yet it could be the exact elevation and acknowledgment that was needed to break on through to create movement and progress.

On the 25th, Mercury and Saturn conjoined in the sign of Pisces. Serious conversations continue, personal boundaries and higher wisdom rise. Are we implementing smarter tools, being more careful with our words, choosing more precise thoughts that may just manifest a better reality?

Mercury now greets the 27th, the day of the New Moon and the day Mercury and Uranus have a friendly handshake. Communication breakthrough, an intuitive hit, an emotional catharsis. A revealing of the method of manifestation. The planetary action of this day holds a promising initiation into new hope, optimism, and a deeper connection to untouched spiritual wisdom.

Astro-Reflection

When I personally look back at all of these transits that swirl around my Pisces Moon and connect to my Cancer stellium, there has been a lot of inner transformation boosting my soul in the last week. In fact, the day the Sun ingressed into Pisces, my second fish died. This came a month after his partner also passed away. I had these two fish for years. I like to believe that when the older fish passed away, the cord had broke. The second fish, the younger one, did his best to keep thriving, but the bond was too strong, too emotional. He was without his anchor. The mutable waters had shifted.

Following the last fish death and entering into the Piscean waters often associated with our unconscious, I began to overcome really big emotional and physical roadblocks. My visualization strengthened and found myself tapping into hidden archetypal worlds that ushered me along and boosted me closer to personal goals. When I needed to pull courage and assistance in, I visualized worlds that represented strength, which include me running, a place where I can harvest inner strength. Again the feet! I always dream of running. My dreams too have been extremely lucid. In these last days, many intimate conversations have been laid at my feet from all corners of all my personal micro-worlds.  Many have been difficult, but all swim in the human experience of doubt, fear, and love. My natal Moon is also in Pisces.

High Priestess, guarding and revealing the language of fish.

I am reminded of the High Priestess in tarot, she sits with the swirling, watery moon at her feet, and a scroll of occult knowledge on her lap. The lunar phases grace her crown chakra. This New Moon feels like an initiation into vaster oceans of hidden knowledge, higher wisdom, and a call to fall deeper into your own soul’s waters. As the North Node nears closer to Neptune’s dizzying vibrations, our own inner worlds reverberate in equally resounding waves. Fall deeper in love with this new way of speaking, swim with the language of fish.
