A Coming Light

December 1st marks the beginning of a new month, a New Moon, and Advent season. We welcome the light to lift us up.

Today is the New Moon in Sagittarius, which occurs in the second decan, overseen by the Moon. The double dose of lunar energy in this already mutable, shifting fire sign, is quite helpful when signifying new chapters. The Moon is changeable by nature, and right now the sign of Sagittarius is looking for a hopeful shift. This New Moon has the power to bring in spirited optimism and new energy for stalled out projects.

Sagittarius is the sign of the archer, known for their adventurous spirit but also for their strong moral compass. Their ideals can keep them curious and optimistic, always looking to expand their own spirit out onto the world and let their fiery light glow. Sagittarius native’s attitude can be quite contagious, encouraging others to look on the bright side, and find adventure in the oddest of places. This Sagittarius season, the inner campfire has been tempered by Mercury’s current retrograde, but this week with a Mercury Cazimi on December 5, a match is lit that will instigate a new hopeful spark.

It is also December 1st, and it marks the beginning of Advent season for the Catholic Church. Advent, derived from the Latin word adventus, means “coming”. This is a season recognizing the first and second coming or arrival of Jesus. One particular Advent tradition is the lighting of 4 candles, one for each Sunday in this month long celebration. The lighting of each candle traditionally is a symbol for the concepts of prayer, penance, sacrifice, and spiritual reflection. One could also adapt each candle to represent hope, peace, joy and love. All quite aligned with Sagittarius’ driving purpose.

As the New Moon grows during this Advent season, may we also carry these concepts with us, allowing our own inner light to grow and lift us up closer to the divine and to one another. May the message of spirited optimsim lift you up in these darker days. Light your own four candles this season, and allow the spirit to come in and provide hope, peace, joy and love.
