Mercury in Aquarius

The second decan of Aquarius, is called the Lord of Science. Dissection and rational thinking may just be the perfect antidote to a week that felt there were literally no brakes.

Mercury in Aquarius. Let us reflect on his presence in this sign currently. He entered on February 11, and will exit Aquarius on March 2.

Mercury is a quick moving planet, has rulership in the signs of Gemini and Virgo. Mercury is never more than 28 degree away from the Sun and hosts the dreaded Mercury retrograde three times a year, where legend has it all technology crashes and commuication scrambles. Mercury is associated with Hermes in Greek, and was known to be the messenger of the Gods. He was given the capability to be an intermediary between the realm of the the underworld and the living, he can work as a bridge to connect the two. He has also been associated with the trickster, mostly due to his nature of frequent retrogrades, appearing then disappearing. In astrology, Mercury is associated with communication, technology, language, medicine, divination, business and commerce, numbers, the mind and learning. To name a few.

Aquarius is the second Saturn sign, following Capricorn. Saturn and Aquarius both are associated with the edge of boundaries, winter and general coldness. Aquarius is a fixed air sign, and it is a sign that prefers rational thinking, and even a bit of isolation at times, this may be more associated with Saturn’s tendency to starve off warmth and life. Planets that show up in this house through transit can also be cooler by nature, Venus in Aquarius may not be her warm and fuzzy usual self, but still compassionate with a kind get-well card.  Aquarius has the eye on the future, is highly concerned with the collective and its movement forward as a whole. Symbolized by the water bearer and his vessel, the vessel contains knowledge for the whole community, and it is the Aquarian that wishes to pour all the knowledge out and share its wealth with the whole. Enlightenment, education, concern, morality and ideals all fall under an Aquarian mind.  Technology and innovation is also the of Aquarian mind. Developing and utilizing out of the box thinking through inventions or new perspectives is the landscape of the water-bearer mind.

Aquarian’s can be those that sit on the edge of society, not fully integrating to public standards, but don’t think that they don’t understand what is going on in the mainstream. They are more apt to detach, pull back and observe. They may be very ideal, which can be a shadow, but if activated properly can revolutionize change.

Mercury entered at a moment when the world just seemed to really come alive in many orthodox and unorthodox ways. Things that stood out: Chinese spy balloons and UFO’s flying over US and other foreign airspace, being shot down, earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, major train derailment of chemical, toxic agents being then set on fire in a small US town, four more train derailments with toxic chemicals following that incident, the Nordstream pipeline being blown up, another school shooting in my homestate at a college campus, US military helicopter just falling out of the sky in a southern US state, and US food processing plants catching fire.

Now I know everyday there are major catastrophes and horrendous acts of horror across the globe, the news cycle moves fast and its unfortunately hard to keep up. I also realize this is a US perspective, but I am trying to encapsulate from my perspective how intense this last week has been since Mercury began to move into the collective sign, Aquarius.

The news cycle just seemed to be at warp speed, and one that just kept hitting. Mercury, fast on his feet, moving through the collective, delivering the news. Have you caught your breath?

I am not one to really comment much on current events, and I have actually been keeping my head in the sand for quite a while. Since Mercury entered Aquarius, I have been on full news alert, and I hate it! Yet I feel like I cannot turn away either, or keep my mouth shut. The archetypes have captured me, this I do know and own fully.

On Saturday, the 18th, Mercury will move into the second decan of Aquarius. This decan is a Mercury-ruled decan, so this is positive. I feel like  Mercury may throw his rudder down into the news cycle, and start sweeping the horizon for some answers. Perhaps this is the week where we get more of the story. Mercury likes to separate wheat from the chaff, and dissect into pieces the whole story.  This may be the period where we all pull back, and say “Ok, what is really going on?” I am hoping that I too get released by the grip of this planetary configuration.

The second decan of Aquarius, is called the Lord of Science. Dissection and rational thinking may just be the perfect antidote to a week that felt there were literally no brakes. In the tarot, it is the Six of Swords. This card shows an image of a river-man rowing a mother and child to a shore. Are they paddling to a safer shore, is it an exile? The river man looks to be protecting the two, maybe he’s actually the father and he is getting his whole family to safety. This seems aptly fitting for this period. The paddle dipped into the water, again reminds me of Mercury in this decan, slowing the currents down just enough to get a better look at what is unfolding.

Swords cut and dissect, and from there we can bring judgement and clarity.

The focus on the collective is strong. Saturn in Aquarius, will soon be leaving this sign, and I do think when he does, the mood of the masses will shift. Better or worse? I cannot tell, but it will be different and we all will feel it, I think we already have been.

Pay attention this week, does your own energy feel like it slows down a little more. Is there tension released? The questions you started with, do they feel like they may be getting some answers?

I’ll be curious to see how Mercury in its own decan does. When Mercury does meet Saturn in another week in the third decan ruled by the Moon, this may just be the leveling up as a society we truly do need. The Moon symbolizes the people, our communities and how we nourish them. Or maybe he shows up as the trickster, joined with Saturn who also is known for feigning his own appearance. Will the wool remain over our own eyes? Let us watch it unfold.
